You might be thinking that employees or applicants are the only ones undergoing background check. Well, you are wrong because tenants are also screened. Land lords order a criminal background check on their tenants. This is to make sure that their business is safe from any illegal activity and also for other tenants to feel safe. Another reason is that they need to keep their place away from any illegal activities so that they can renew it for another year. And it will not be a pretty site if police are always swarming the area, it will surely frighten other tenants and leave the place.

So it will be hard for you if you have a criminal record and you want to rent a place. What can you do to get pass the criminal background check? Make sure you know someone who can back you up that you are of good moral character and that you are not involved anymore in any illegal activities. A pastor or a teacher whom you know very well can write a letter to the land lord stating that you are an outstanding model citizen. And it is also better if you can also write a letter explaining your side. This will deliver a message to the land lord that you are serious.

Another you could do is to provide additional papers such as certifications from volunteer services. This will be a strong document that can support your claim as an outstanding model citizen. You might wait for several days for the approval of the owner. But be patient because this is the process right now all background checks are done for security purposes. And when you put yourself on their shoes then you will do the same. Do not give up when you are turned down the first time there are a lot of apartments that you can apply to rent.
