What is Genealogy?

Genealogy is the study and tracing of family pedigrees. This involves the collection of the names of relatives, both living and deceased, and establishing the relationships between them based on primary, secondary and/or circumstantial evidence or documentation, thus building up a cohesive family tree. Genealogy is sometimes also referred to as family history, although these terms may be used distinctly: the former being the basic study of who is related to whom; the latter involving more "fleshing out" of the life and family histories of the individuals involved.

Genealogy helps people discover who they are. This unique avenue to studying history enables children to recognize how their families have contributed to our growing nation. Ira Wolfman, author of Do People Grow on Family Trees? relates genealogy to his young readers:

Your ancestors are part of the history of the world. Your family has played a part in the building of the United States. Whether your family is large or small, traditional ‘mom-and-dad’ or sprawling family you have a proud heritage and a history that is all your own...Genealogy isn’t just about ancestors. It’s also about you. You are a part of history...

To get into the real fun part of genealogy. Do interviews with your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in your family lines. Even talk to your families friends. Tell them you are researching your family roots. Ask them birth and death dates and places, marriage dates and places and who the person married. Always begin with the current year and work backwards. When you get stuck move to the next line or investigate the brothers or sisters of your ancestor. I have found some of my best information by researching the brother or sister of my direct line of ancestry. Also ask them to check their homes for information they might have on ancestors and family members.
